Ireland launches 'Future Framework for Offshore Renewable Energy': 29 key actions

The Minister for the Environment, Climate and Communications, Eamon Ryan, launched the eagerly awaited 'Future Framework for Offshore Renewable Energy', marking a pivotal moment in Ireland's industrial landscape. This strategy outlines a roadmap set to transform Ireland into a powerhouse of offshore wind energy, with projections aiming to deliver an impressive 37GW by 2050.

The Future Framework represents a visionary long-term plan, charting the course for Ireland's offshore renewable energy (ORE) sector. With a target of achieving 20GW of offshore wind by 2040, and a minimum of 37GW by 2050, the strategy not only sets bold objectives but also lays down the groundwork necessary to achieve them.

Crucially, the framework provides a robust evidence base to support Ireland's ambitious ORE targets, underpinning the nation's commitment to sustainable energy practices. It forms a cornerstone of the Offshore Wind Energy Programme, a comprehensive plan devised by the Offshore Wind Delivery Taskforce to ensure coordinated efforts across government, agencies, and industry stakeholders.

The Future Framework for Offshore Renewable Energy includes 29 key actions to develop Ireland’s long-term, plan-led approach to offshore wind.Key actions outlined in the framework include measures related to marine planning, biodiversity preservation, grid connectivity, supply chain development, workforce training, and regulatory consenting processes. The framework emphasizes the principles of environmental protection, affordability of energy, community engagement, and technological innovation.

Minister Ryan expressed his enthusiasm for the Future Framework, highlighting its potential to revolutionize Ireland's economy while bolstering energy sovereignty. "Renewable energy projects are poised to revolutionize our economy, offering significant regional and national economic benefits while giving us more control over our energy sovereignty," stated Minister Ryan.

The publication of the Future Framework follows an extensive five-week period of public consultation earlier this year, underscoring the government's commitment to transparency and stakeholder engagement.

As Ireland embarks on this transformative journey towards harnessing its offshore renewable energy potential, Ryan assured that the West Coast would be at the forefront of these developments. "We will ensure that Ireland’s West Coast is on the cutting edge of this development," affirmed Ryan.
