CIP joins EDF power solutions, ESB and Sumitomo in 1,080 MW Five Estuaries offshore wind project

Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP), through its fifth flagship fund, Copenhagen Infrastructure V (CI V), has acquired the 25% stake previously held by a Macquarie-led consortium in the Five Estuaries Offshore Wind Farm, a project with a capacity of up to 1,080 MW.

Following the transaction, CIP joins EDF power solutions, with a 33.33% stake; ESB, with 20.83%; and Sumitomo Corporation, with 20.83%.

The offshore wind farm will be located around 40 kilometres off the north Essex and south Suffolk coast. The project received development consent in December 2025, following more than four years of development, and once operational is expected to generate enough electricity to meet the equivalent annual needs of approximately one million average UK homes.

The updated ownership structure marks a new milestone for Five Estuaries, bringing together partners with experience in the development, financing and operation of large-scale offshore wind projects worldwide.

CIP said the acquisition further strengthens its portfolio of UK energy infrastructure investments and that it will participate in the project as a long-term investor.

Kunal Patel, Partner at Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners, said offshore wind offers the UK an opportunity to deploy clean energy at scale while supporting job creation, energy security and economic growth.

Matthieu Hue, CEO of EDF power solutions UK and Ireland, said Five Estuaries complements the company’s existing portfolio in the UK and Ireland and that the partners will continue working with local stakeholders to bring the project online.

Since receiving development consent, the project partners have continued work on the project design, early procurement activities and engagement with landowners, communities and other stakeholders.

CIP’s acquisition of the 25% stake therefore establishes a new partnership structure to advance one of the largest offshore wind projects currently under development off the east coast of England.
