Construction approved for Denmark's largest offshore wind farm, Thor
The Danish Energy Agency has granted an establishment permit for the Thor Offshore Wind Farm, allowing the construction of Denmark's largest offshore wind farm to commence in earnest. RWE therefore now has all permits in place to start construction work at sea in spring 2025. Once operational, the wind farm will generate green electricity equivalent to the consumption of one million households.
“Thor will be Denmark’s largest offshore wind farm to date and will make a significant contribution to achieving the goal of multiplying Denmark’s production of green electricity. But this is far from the end. We have already initiated tenders to enable at least 6 GW of additional offshore wind by 2030,” says Kristoffer Böttzauw, director of the Danish Energy Agency.
Denmark’s Largest Offshore Wind Farm
With a capacity of over 1,000 MW (1 GW), Thor will be Denmark's largest offshore wind farm. The park will consist of 72 wind turbines, each with a capacity of 14 MW, which will provide enough green electricity to cover the consumption of more than one million households when Thor is connected to the grid by the end of 2027. Denmark currently has 17 established offshore wind farms with a total capacity of approximately 2.7 GW.
Thomas Michel, COO of RWE Offshore Wind, stated, “With our Thor project, we are delivering Denmark’s largest offshore wind farm to date. But it is not just the size of the project that makes us ambitious. We are also leading the way with investments in new sustainable technology, including recyclable rotor blades and turbine towers made of greener steel. Denmark is already a pioneer when it comes to renewable energy and innovative solutions. We are proud to contribute to this journey with Thor.”
