Local politicians, community leaders, and industry representatives gathered in County Donegal to mark the official opening of the Lenalea Wind Farm, a joint venture between SSE Renewables and FuturEnergy Ireland.
The completion of the 30MW wind farm represents a substantial investment of over €40 million by SSE Renewables and FuturEnergy Ireland, showcasing a strong commitment to renewable energy in Ireland.
Environmental impact and community benefits
The wind farm, equipped with seven Vestas V117-4.3 MW turbines, not only contributes to Ireland's renewable energy targets but also supports Microsoft's sustainability goals through a Corporate Power Purchase Agreement (CPPA).
During construction, the Lenalea project supported 35 jobs in Donegal, highlighting the positive economic impact on the region. Supply chain partners, including Omagh-based Adman Civil Projects and turbine supplier Vestas, played crucial roles in the project's success.
Ministerial endorsement
Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Charlie McConalogue T.D, praised the project's completion, emphasizing its role in advancing Ireland's renewable energy objectives and enhancing energy security. “Congratulations to all involved with Lenalea Wind Farm. Like all successful initiatives, it took leadership, partnership and teamwork to bring the development to this stage,” he said.
The establishment of the Lenalea Community Fund, set to open later this year, promises to deliver further benefits to the local community, with a focus on sustainable development and community engagement.

Heather Donald, SSE Renewables' Head of Development & Construction (GB & Ireland), underscored the strategic significance of wind energy in achieving climate goals and fostering regional development.
Joint development for climate action
