Rotterdam announces the development of a new terminal for offshore wind activities
The Port of Rotterdam plans to develop a 45-hectare terminal in the northwestern corner of Maasvlakte, aimed at supporting offshore wind activities. The terminal will provide facilities for storage, transport, (pre-)assembly, and delivery of components for both wind turbines and foundations.
The site will feature direct sea access, heavy-duty quays, and high-quality logistics infrastructure. A roll-on/roll-off facility will also be included, allowing all modes of transport. In addition to construction, the terminal will be equipped to handle the decommissioning of offshore wind farms. Market parties can register for a market consultation starting today, with operations expected to begin by mid-2029.
The terminal will include 835 metres of quay, suitable for the latest offshore wind installation vessels and jack-up vessels, as well as pre-assembly activities on the quay.
With this project, the Port of Rotterdam Authority aims to provide the offshore wind industry with the necessary capacity and foster sector growth. “With this new terminal, we are making an important contribution to the capacity needed for the offshore wind sector. Thanks to its direct North Sea location, deep draught, and existing offshore cluster, the Port of Rotterdam is ideally suited for these activities,” said Matthijs van Doorn, Vice President Commercial of the Port Authority.
The terminal comes at a crucial time, as more offshore wind farms are planned in the North Sea in the coming years, and the lack of suitable port infrastructure has been a limiting factor for the industry. This development positions Rotterdam as a strategic hub for offshore wind energy in Europe.
