Trump administration targets wind turbines with new 50% tariff

The U.S. Department of Commerce announced that wind turbines, their parts and components, along with 406 other steel- and aluminum-derived products, will now be subject to a 50% tariff under Section 232.

The expanded tariffs also cover mobile cranes, excavators, heavy machinery, railcars, furniture, compressors, pumps, and other industrial and consumer goods.

Jeffrey Kessler, Under Secretary of Commerce for Industry and Security, said the measure “broadens the scope of tariffs on steel and aluminum and closes off avenues for evasion, supporting the continued revitalization of U.S. steel and aluminum industries.”

The decision is the latest in a series of actions by the Trump administration to increase protection for domestic metals producers. In recent months, the administration issued proclamations removing exemptions, raising tariffs from 25% to 50%, and strengthening enforcement against misclassification and duty evasion.

For the U.S. wind energy sector, this measure increases costs for turbines and components, potentially affecting ongoing and planned projects across the country.

The Department of Commerce noted that the next public comment period for requesting additions to the tariff list will open in September and be announced in the Federal Register.
