Fourteen energy companies and organizations from Northern and Central Europe have signed an agreement to establish the Baltic Energy Initiative, a cooperation platform focused on strengthening the region’s energy security and competitiveness through joint projects and expertise.

The initiative will focus on several areas of the energy sector, with offshore wind, hydrogen and carbon capture and storage (CCS) among its priorities, alongside LNG and BioLNG, nuclear power and small modular reactors (SMRs).

The agreement is designed to provide a platform for pooling expertise, sharing experience and developing projects with an international reach. The partners will also cooperate on securing funding from European Union programmes and other international sources, according to ORLEN, one of the initiative’s 14 signatories.

The initiative brings together companies and organizations from Poland, Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia and Norway: ORLEN, Eesti Energia, Enefit, Fortum, KN Energies, DNV Energy Systems, Topsoe, Siemens Energy, Adven, Steady Energy, P2X Solutions, Latvenergo, Gasgrid Finland and Orsted.

Protecting energy infrastructure will be another focus of the initiative. The participating organizations will exchange experience on critical infrastructure protection, cybersecurity, emergency preparedness and responses to physical and hybrid threats. They will also jointly assess projects aimed at increasing infrastructure resilience and the possibilities for financing them.

The Baltic Energy Initiative will additionally seek to strengthen the energy sector’s position in dialogue with European institutions. Joint positions and recommendations are expected to address areas including regulation, investment and support mechanisms for strategic projects.
