Scotland approves 560 MW BESS facility to strengthen grid
Apatura has received planning consent to construct a new 560 MW / 1,120 MWh grid-scale battery energy storage system (BESS) in West Dunbartonshire, Scotland.
Approval from the Scottish Government’s Energy Consents Unit brings the developer’s total permitted capacity in central Scotland to over 2.1 GW.
The project is located on land adjacent to Cochno Road, three kilometres from Clydebank and twelve kilometres from Glasgow. The new site will be connected via an underground cable to the Windyhill substation, 560 metres away, and to the Drumchapel substation, three kilometres distant.
Andrew Philpott, Apatura’s Development Director, stated: “The Whitehall project is in a carefully selected strategic location that will directly support the UK’s energy security strategy. Once operational, it will play a key role in providing the resilient network infrastructure needed for a net-zero future.”
In the letter of approval, Scottish ministers said they “view the proposed development as essential infrastructure. By providing energy storage, it adds the flexibility and resilience necessary to maintain a secure and reliable power supply to all our homes and businesses as the energy transition proceeds.”
