Hungary’s biggest operating BESS comes online with Greenvolt

Greenvolt Group has inaugurated the largest operational battery energy storage system (BESS) in Hungary, marking what the company describes as a significant milestone for the country's energy transition and for the growing role of energy storage across Europe.

Located in Buj, northeastern Hungary, the facility combines 99.8 MW of power capacity with 288.6 MWh of storage capacity. According to Greenvolt, the project will enhance grid flexibility, support frequency and voltage regulation, and enable greater integration of renewable energy into Hungary’s national electricity system.

The inauguration ceremony brought together representatives from the energy sector and public institutions, highlighting the strategic importance of the project for both Hungary and the wider region. Attendees included Greenvolt Group CEO João Manso Neto, Hungarian State Secretary for Energy András Tóth, MAVIR Deputy CEO for Operations Gergo Batta, and Buj Mayor László Takács.

Commenting on the project, João Manso Neto said that increasing electrification and the growing share of renewable energy are making flexibility an essential component of modern power systems. “As power systems become increasingly electrified and powered by renewable energy, flexibility is becoming an indispensable element of the energy transition. This project reflects Greenvolt's conviction in the strategic role of storage and reinforces our position in one of the fastest-growing segments of the energy sector.”

The new facility strengthens Greenvolt’s position in the energy storage market, a segment that is expected to play a critical role in supporting renewable energy deployment and ensuring the stability and reliability of electricity networks across Europe.
