Italy's electrochemical storage systems surpass 12.9 GWh, photovoltaics drive major growth
By the end of 2024, Italy has 733,766 electrochemical storage systems connected, with a total capacity of 12.94 GWh and a total power of 5.56 GW, according to Italia Solare.
70% of the connected capacity, or 9.05 GWh (4.46 GW of power), corresponds to storage systems associated with photovoltaic installations. In particular, 68%, or 8.63 GWh (4.31 GW of power), corresponds to storage systems linked to photovoltaic installations with a power rating of less than 20 kW.
According to the Italia Solare report, autonomous storage represents a substantial part of the installed capacity, accounting for 29.6% of the total capacity with 3.8 GWh and 1 GW of power, while a residual 0.6% is associated with thermoelectric and wind plants (56 MWh and 2 MWh, respectively).
Autonomous energy is advancing, but residential energy is slowing down
In 2024, 209,111 electrochemical storage systems were connected, with a total power of 2.11 GW and a total capacity of 5.92 GWh. The 18 isolated storage systems connected during the last year account for 57% of this capacity, with 3.35 GWh, while storage systems associated with photovoltaic systems represent the remaining 43% with 2.57 GWh.
However, the latter storage systems account for 60% (1.27 GW) of the power connected during 2024, with the remaining 40% (843 MW) corresponding to autonomous storage.
When focusing on independent storage, of the 18 storage systems connected during the last year: 4 plants with 147 MWh were connected during the first quarter, 3 plants with 904 MWh were connected during the second quarter, and 5 plants with 1,461 MWh were connected during the third quarter. In the third quarter, 1,000 MWh were connected, and in the fourth quarter, 6 plants with 834 MWh were connected.
Lombardy leads the residential market
Lombardy leads the ranking with 1,601 MWh, followed by Veneto (1,186 MWh), Emilia-Romagna (832 MWh), Lazio (651 MWh), and Piedmont (629 MWh). These five regions account for more than 55% of the total capacity related solely to storage associated with photovoltaic systems and host approximately half of Italy's population.
The northern region is the leader in the independent market
Autonomous storage systems are mainly distributed in the North market area, where there are 14 systems, accounting for 77% of the total capacity (2.9 GWh) and 73% of the total power (751 MW).
In the Central North and Central South areas, 7 storage installations are connected, representing 18% of the total capacity (695 MWh) and 19% of the total power (195 MW).
In the South market area and the islands, the rest are connected. 6 storage installations are connected, corresponding to 5% of the total capacity (205 MWh) and 8% of the total power (85 MW).
