Nearly 10,000 battery storage connection requests submitted in Germany in 2024
Germany’s federal network agency, the Bundesnetzagentur, has released, for the first time, detailed figures on connection requests and approvals for battery storage systems.
In 2024, grid operators received a total of 9,710 connection requests for medium-voltage battery storage installations. These figures exclude residential home storage systems. The requested projects together account for an expected capacity of around 400 gigawatts and 661 gigawatt-hours of storage.
Currently, 921 medium-voltage battery storage systems are in operation, with a combined net capacity of approximately 2.3 gigawatts and 3.2 gigawatt-hours of storage.
In the same year, grid operators issued around 3,800 connection approvals for requests submitted in 2024 and previous years. The approved projects represent a total capacity of roughly 25 gigawatts and 46 gigawatt-hours. However, these approvals obligate only the grid operators, meaning not all projects may ultimately be implemented by the applicants.
The data are based on the latest monitoring survey and cover only the year 2024. Updates on developments in 2025 will be published in due course.
