UK welcomes 300 MW BESS, one of the country’s largest storage projects
Statera Energy has powered up Thurrock Storage, one of the largest battery energy storage system (BESS) in the United Kingdom, with 300 MW of output and 600 MWh of capacity, now connected and actively delivering electricity to the grid.
Strategically located east of London, the site is capable of providing instant power to up to 680,000 homes for two hours. Thanks to its rapid response capability, it can deliver its full output within seconds, making a significant contribution to the UK’s energy security and grid stability.
Thurrock Storage is situated next to the former Tilbury coal-fired power station, symbolising a major shift in land use from fossil fuels to clean energy. It also sits alongside Thurrock Flexible Generation, a 450 MW flexible generation plant that supports the grid during extended periods of low renewable output.
The project was connected to the grid by National Grid Electricity Transmission (NGET). John Twomey, Director of Customer and Network Development at NGET, noted that the connection of the UK’s largest battery “marks a significant step in Britain’s energy transition.”
In addition to strengthening the grid, the project will create sustainable local jobs and training programmes for operations and maintenance. According to Tom Vernon, CEO of Statera Energy, expanding battery storage capacity is “essential to support the grid when renewable generation is low or changes quickly.”
Statera currently has over 2.1 GW of projects delivered or under construction, and more than 16 GW in development or consented. The company has already committed over £1 billion in investment, with plans to reach £7 billion by 2030.
