Ukraine’s largest BESS enters operation with a total capacity of 200 MW
Ukrainian energy group DTEK, in partnership with Fluence, a global leader in smart energy storage, has completed the country’s largest battery energy storage project to date, with a total capacity of 200 MW.
The company has connected six new battery storage systems to the power grid in the Kyiv and Dnipropetrovsk regions, with individual capacities ranging from 20 MW to 50 MW. Together, the systems can store up to 400 MWh of electricity — enough to supply power to 600,000 Ukrainian households for two hours.
The new installations are designed to enhance grid security, minimize the risk of power outages and accidents, and provide critical backup in case of generation failures.
Rapid delivery under urgent conditions
Remarkably, the project was completed in just six months, from March to August 2025 — significantly faster than the industry average for projects of this scale. According to DTEK, the accelerated timeline was driven by the urgent need to bring the systems online before the winter season.
The company invested a total of €125 million in the project, which is expected to strengthen the resilience and stability of Ukraine’s power grid while supporting the country’s green energy transition and the decentralization of its energy system.
Strategic importance amid energy challenges
Against the backdrop of large-scale attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, the role of energy storage has become as critical as generation itself. The National Renewable Energy Action Plan 2030, adopted by the Ukrainian government, highlights the necessity of such systems to safeguard energy security.
Svitlana Grinchuk, Ukraine’s Minister of Energy, praised the initiative: “The role of energy storage has become as fundamental as energy generation itself. Thanks to DTEK’s proactive approach and the cutting-edge technologies of our American partners at Fluence, every new megawatt of storage serves as a shield for the entire energy system. This means greater security for Ukrainians and fewer risks of emergency blackouts.”
Maxim Timchenko, CEO of DTEK, emphasized the strategic milestone: “This is a historic step for Ukraine’s energy system and will shape its development in the coming years. Together with Fluence, the global leader in energy storage, we are integrating state-of-the-art technologies to make Ukraine’s grid more reliable and sustainable.”
Julian Nebreda, CEO of Fluence, highlighted the collaboration as a symbol of resilience: “We are honored to collaborate with DTEK on this landmark project. The determination and efficiency demonstrated by DTEK in delivering it are truly inspiring. This achievement is a testament to resilience and a symbol of what can be accomplished through strong international cooperation. Even in difficult times, innovation and collaboration can pave the way to greater energy security.”
