Amazon secures offshore wind energy through PPA with RWE in Germany
RWE and Amazon have signed a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) for 110 MW of electricity from RWE’s Nordseecluster B offshore wind farm in Germany. The agreement builds on the Strategic Framework Agreement the companies signed in June 2025, under which RWE supports Amazon’s carbon-free energy goals, while Amazon Web Services provides cloud services, AI, and data analytics to advance RWE’s digital transformation.
The 110 MW capacity is expected to generate enough electricity to supply more than 139,000 German households annually.
The Nordseecluster offshore wind farm is located in the German North Sea, approximately 50 kilometres north of the island of Juist. The project is being developed in two phases: Nordseecluster A, with a total capacity of 660 MW, is currently under construction and scheduled for commissioning in early 2027. Nordseecluster B will add 900 MW, with commercial operation expected in 2029.
The project is a joint venture between RWE, which holds 51%, and Norges Bank Investment Management, which holds 49%. PPAs with major offtakers like Amazon help accelerate Germany’s transition to decarbonised electricity while supporting long-term energy security.
“Power Purchase Agreements like this one with Amazon are crucial for accelerating Germany’s decarbonisation while strengthening long?term security of supply,” said Ulf Kerstin, Chief Commercial Officer at RWE Supply & Trading. “By enabling large?scale offshore projects such as the Nordseecluster, we can bring more reliable, carbon-free electricity onto the grid and support a resilient energy system.”
