Denmark’s largest offshore wind farm to be lit by Glamox

The company dedicated to lighting solutions, Glamoxhas secured a contract to provide energy-efficient LED marine lighting for Denmark’s largest offshore wind farm. The contract, awarded by ProCon Wind Energy, involves the installation of lighting on 72 wind turbine foundations for the wind farm, which is being developed by RWE.

The Thor wind farm, situated approximately 22 km from Thorsminde on the west coast of Jutland, will generate over 1 GW of green electricity for the Danish market once operational.

As part of the project, Glamox has supplied 1,200 marine-certified LED luminaires for the external and suspended internal platforms of the wind turbine foundations. These platforms play a crucial role in providing access to the turbines and ensuring the technical connection between the monopile foundations and the wind turbines. Given their placement at external access points, the lighting fixtures must endure extreme marine conditions, including saltwater exposure, waves, lightning strikes, and vibrations from strong winds. Each turbine foundation, standing up to 100 metres tall, will weigh approximately 1,500 tonnes and will support Siemens Gamesa SG 14-236 DD wind turbines.

“For our customers and their offshore wind farms, lighting is key for safe and efficient working conditions. Reliable lighting is paramount for every service mission. It must be durable, capable of withstanding vibrations from the wind turbines and the harsh offshore environment, including rain, wind, corrosive seawater, and sub-zero temperatures. Glamox provides exactly this,” said Thomas Dybro, Head of Project Development & Sales at ProCon Wind Energy.

Denmark: A superpower in offshore wind

“Denmark is an offshore wind superpower and generates the highest amount of offshore wind power per capita in the world,” stated Astrid Simonsen Joos, Group CEO of Glamox. “Robust, highly dependable, and energy-efficient lighting is an intrinsic part of offshore wind, and we are thrilled to be part of this green revolution, lighting the turbines of Denmark’s largest offshore wind farm.

The lighting system incorporates Glamox’s second-generation MIR linear luminaires, which will be procured, supplied, and installed by ProCon Wind Energy at shipyards in Poland and Greece. The second generation of these durable marine-certified luminaires was launched with an eye-catching stunt, where a luminaire fitted with a battery pack was dropped from a helicopter at a height of 500 metres above a fjord, demonstrating its robustness.

The Thor wind farm project is progressing as planned, with turbine installations set for 2026 and operations expected to commence in 2027.
