From offshore to onshore: Vestas to reconfigure Isle of Wight factory

Vestas’ facilities on the Isle of Wight have been integral to the global production of turbine blades since 2002. Currently, the factory manufactures blades for the V174 offshore turbine, but demand for this product is waning, and site limitations prevent it from accommodating the next generation of offshore blades.

In response, Vestas has reached an agreement in principle with the UK Government to repurpose the facility for onshore blade production, primarily to support the UK market. Vestas acknowledges and appreciates the government’s support in facilitating this transition.

The shift to onshore blade manufacturing aligns with the increasing demand for onshore wind energy in the UK, particularly following the government's decision to lift the de facto ban on onshore wind projects in England and focus on strengthening domestic supply chains.

The transition is expected to sustain around 300 manufacturing jobs, out of the 600 employees currently working in manufacturing, logistics, and support roles at the Isle of Wight site. Vestas also plans to create additional job opportunities within its UK operations and across other Vestas facilities.

Importantly, Vestas’ technology operations on the Isle of Wight, which employ approximately 140 people, will remain unaffected by this decision. The site will continue to serve as a centre of excellence for blade research, design, and development.

Anders Nielsen, Group CTOO of Vestas, said: “We have invested in jobs and manufacturing activities on the Isle of Wight for more than two decades, and we have great pride in the technical expertise that has been developed at the site. We are pleased that this partnership in principle with the UK Government means we can continue manufacturing activities at the Isle of Wight to support the deployment of onshore wind in the UK. The commitment to domestic manufacturing and clean energy from the new government and Secretary of State has been instrumental in making this decision. My sincere gratitude goes to everyone working for us on the Isle of Wight, for their significant contribution to wind energy, and we are pleased to be retaining, and offering a significant number of opportunities for our impacted colleagues during this process.”
