Google and Shell extend operations of offshore wind farm in the Netherlands
Google has announced a groundbreaking new agreement with Shell that will extend the lifespan of the Netherlands’ first offshore wind farm, marking a major milestone in the renewable energy sector. This power purchase agreement (PPA) is the first of its kind globally to extend the operational life of an offshore wind farm through a corporate agreement.
The deal will allow the Shell NoordzeeWind farm—originally slated for decommissioning—to continue operating for at least four additional years beyond its planned closure date. Google has purchased 100% of the farm’s 108-megawatt capacity, enabling Shell to secure permit extensions and invest in crucial upgrades that prevent the early retirement of valuable clean energy infrastructure.
“This effort helps avoid the premature loss of vital carbon-free energy resources and reinforces our commitment to a sustainable energy future,” Google highlighted in its announcement. To date, the tech company has supported over 1 gigawatt of clean energy generation capacity in the Netherlands through various PPAs, solidifying its position as a key player in advancing renewable energy in the region.
This project represents not only Google’s largest offshore wind investment to date but also sets a precedent for other companies looking to revitalise renewable energy assets facing decommissioning. Google hopes the initiative will inspire similar partnerships worldwide to extend the life of existing clean energy infrastructure.
