Iberdrola has inaugurated the Saint Brieuc offshore wind farm, located in the Brittany region of France. With an investment of €2.4 billion, this project has become one of the first two operational offshore wind farms in the country. With a capacity of 496 megawatts (MW), the wind farm will provide clean, local energy to nearly one million people, boosting energy independence and contributing to France’s and Europe’s climate goals.
A European collaborative project
The Saint Brieuc wind farm has been a result of the collaboration of more than 150 European companies, 60 of which are Spanish. Key participants include Siemens Gamesa, responsible for the wind turbines, and Navantia-Windar, which provided the foundations and transition pieces. This effort has created over 1,700 jobs, 500 of them locally, highlighting the project's importance to the local and regional economy.
The Saint Brieuc wind farm showcases Iberdrola’s ability to overcome construction challenges such as the hardness of the basalt seabed and the strong tides in the area. Iberdrola's president, Ignacio Galán, stated, "This project lays the foundations of the offshore wind sector in France and demonstrates the potential of this technology to drive energy independence, competitiveness, and the reindustrialization of Europe."
Global expansion of offshore wind energy
Saint Brieuc is Iberdrola’s fourth operational offshore wind farm, with other installations in the United Kingdom and Germany. Additionally, the company is currently building four more wind farms, bringing its total offshore wind investment to €15 billion. These new projects are expected to become operational between 2025 and 2026, and total investment in the sector will exceed €25 billion in the coming years.
Iberdrola strengthens its presence in France
Alongside the Saint Brieuc offshore wind farm, Iberdrola operates 11 onshore wind farms in France and has a large portfolio of wind and photovoltaic projects in various stages of development. The company has offices and operational centers in multiple French cities, reaffirming its commitment to Europe's energy transition.
With the launch of Saint Brieuc, Iberdrola continues to consolidate its position as one of the global leaders in offshore wind energy, actively contributing to the decarbonization and reindustrialization of the European continent.
