Microsoft partners with RWE for two 15-year PPAs on Texas wind farms

RWE and Microsoft Corporation have recently finalized two 15-year Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs). These agreements entail Microsoft purchasing clean electricity from RWE's newly established onshore wind farms in Texas. The commencement ceremony for the RWE Peyton Creek II onshore wind farm has recently occurred, while RWE has decided to invest in the Lane City project. Combined, these two onshore wind ventures boast a capacity of 446 megawatts (MW).

Andrew Flanagan, CEO of RWE Clean Energy, expressed enthusiasm about collaborating with Microsoft to fulfill their sustainability objectives. He emphasized their joint commitment to shaping a clean energy future and RWE's dedication to advancing renewable goals while supporting local community growth sustainably.

Multiple RWE’s partners

To construct the Peyton Creek II and Lane City onshore wind farms, RWE has partnered with leading renewable industry firms, including Vestas, Wanzek Construction, Inc. (a MasTec Renewables company), and RES, a global renewable energy solutions provider. RWE has opted for Vestas North America's V163 4.5 MW turbines for these projects, with Wanzek and RES leading construction activities on RWE's behalf.

Construction is currently underway for the Peyton Creek Wind Complex, a 243 MW project located near RWE's Peyton Creek I wind farm in Bay City, Texas. Meanwhile, construction for the Lane City project, boasting a capacity of 203 MW, is set to commence this summer.

4.8 GW in Texas, 35 projects

These projects underscore RWE's expansion of its presence in Texas, its largest U.S. market. With 33 operational renewable projects totaling 4.3 GW of installed capacity, upon completion of the two aforementioned projects, RWE's renewables footprint in Texas will grow to 4.8 GW.

Furthermore, RWE remains committed to collaborating with local communities to ensure lasting economic benefits, employment opportunities, and tax revenues to support essential services. Peyton Creek II and Lane City are anticipated to generate between 250-300 jobs each during construction and sustain approximately 20 full-time positions once operational. Additionally, Peyton Creek II is projected to contribute approximately $300 million to the local tax base in Matagorda County, while Lane City will provide a similar amount to the local tax base in Wharton County.
