Renewables supply nearly half of Ireland’s electricity as wind reaches new milestone
Renewable energy generated 48% of Ireland’s electricity in February, according to new provisional data from EirGrid, the operator and developer of the country’s electricity grid. The figure marks a significant increase compared with January, when renewables accounted for 39% of the power mix.
Wind energy played a leading role in the surge, contributing 41% of Ireland’s overall electricity mix during the month. Total wind generation reached 1,245 GWh, highlighting the growing importance of the technology in the country’s power system.

The data also shows that gas accounted for 37% of electricity generation in February, while 14% of electricity was imported through interconnectors.
According to EirGrid, the month also saw a new record for wind-powered electricity generation in Ireland. On 14 February at 5:50 pm, wind generation reached 3,898 MW, surpassing the previous record of 3,884 MW, which had been set on 13 February 2025.
Electricity demand also reached a new milestone. On the same day, Saturday 14 February, demand peaked at 5,408 MW at 6:10 pm, setting a new record for a Saturday. The previous Saturday peak had been recorded just a month earlier, when demand reached 5,297 MW on 3 January.
Overall electricity demand on the system stood at 3,027 GWh in February, compared with 3,409 GWh in January, according to EirGrid.
Charlie McGee, System Operational Manager at EirGrid, said the figures highlight the increasing role of renewable energy in Ireland’s power system.
“February saw the biggest contribution of renewable energy on the electricity grid since the same month last year,” McGee said, adding that the country continues to work toward “making the power system more sustainable for the future and increasing the amount of renewable energy that powers Ireland’s electricity grid.”
He also noted that the typical seasonal pattern of higher electricity demand during winter continued through February, with a second consecutive monthly record for peak Saturday demand recorded on the system.
