RWE begins construction of its offshore wind energy control center

RWE has started construction of a new office building in Jemgum that will serve as the base for the permanent monitoring and control of RWE’s current and future offshore wind farms in Germany and continental Europe.

The construction, on a plot of 4,700 square meters, is being carried out by Real Immobilien GmbH. The new offshore wind control center is expected to be operational by the spring of 2026.

According to the company, the new building will be leased long-term. Subject to approval, construction of the building will begin in the coming weeks, with completion expected in the fall, after which the offices will be equipped and the technical equipment will be installed in the control room.

Initially, 50 RWE employees will move into the building, overseeing, for example, vessel movements, as well as the wind turbines and electrical installations, such as the transformer substations.

In front of the two-story building, about 50 parking spaces will be installed, along with charging points for electric vehicles and bike parking facilities.

According to the company, the building will meet the highest sustainability standards. For example, recycled materials will be used, and special attention will be paid to optimizing the building’s energy efficiency.

Additionally, renewable energy sources will be used for electricity and heating, along with water-saving measures. The company will also apply for the "Quality Seal for Sustainable Buildings" (QNG), awarded by the German Federal Ministry of Housing, Urban Development, and Construction.

Jenny Daun, councilor of the district of Leer, stated that they are "delighted that the district is considered an attractive location for companies involved in the energy transition. This means that not only are we bearing the burden of the transition, as electricity and hydrogen pipelines are being installed in our district, but we also benefit from companies setting up here and bringing jobs."

For his part, Derk Niklas Janssen, future operations director at RWE, said that they are “thrilled to have our new headquarters here in Jemgum. This new building will provide our employees with an ideal and state-of-the-art working environment. But the comfort of our current operations team is not all: we want to keep growing and are looking for more qualified employees, especially from here in the region.”
