ScottishPower has signed an agreement with Siemens Gamesa worth 1 billion pounds for the construction of offshore wind turbines at its East Anglia TWO wind farm.
This agreement will allow Siemens Gamesa to supply 64 of its flagship SG 14-236 DD offshore wind turbines, featuring a rotor diameter of 236 meters—almost as tall as the Shard’s observation deck—for ScottishPower’s third offshore wind project in the southern North Sea.
Located 33 kilometers off the Suffolk coast, East Anglia TWO will have a generation capacity of up to 960 MW of electricity, enough to supply the equivalent of nearly one million homes. The 115-meter-long blades will be manufactured at Siemens Gamesa’s plant in Hull, which currently employs around 1,300 people after hiring over 600 employees in the past 12 months.
This agreement comes shortly after ScottishPower announced its intention to double its investment in the United Kingdom, reaching £24 billion between 2024 and 2028, compared to the initially planned £12 billion.
Commitment to clean energy
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer emphasized that the goal is to make the United Kingdom a clean energy superpower, boosting industrial centers and overcoming growth barriers in towns and cities. "If we act decisively and in time, the UK has the opportunity to lead the world in future industries, working in collaboration with companies like ScottishPower and Siemens Energy, creating real energy security, reducing energy bills, and generating jobs and supply chains in the UK," he stated.
Meanwhile, Energy Secretary Ed Miliband described the investment as "a great vote of confidence in the UK’s growing renewable energy sector and will boost our clean energy future, supporting skilled jobs and green growth in Hull and beyond."
Positive impact on the economy and employment
Charlie Jordan, CEO of ScottishPower Renewables, pointed out that this contract reflects the positive impact of East Anglia’s offshore wind projects on communities and regions across the UK, creating a cleaner and greener future. "We are fulfilling the UK supply chain, ensuring that order books provide the stability and confidence for the industry to innovate and expand," he said.
