UK achieves major milestone with 22.4 GW wind energy generation

The UK has reached a new milestone in wind energy generation, producing a remarkable 22.4 gigawatts (GW) of clean electricity, as confirmed by the National Energy System Operator (NESO). The record was set at 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, December 15, surpassing the previous record of 21.8 GW set on December 21, 2023.

This achievement provided 54% of the UK’s electricity at the time, reinforcing wind energy as a key component of the country’s clean energy mix.

Barnaby Wharton, Director of Future Electricity Systems at RenewableUK, highlighted the significance of the milestone: "The Clean Power 2030 Action Plan, unveiled last week, sets specific targets for wind and solar farms, so it’s fantastic to see wind energy breaking records and once again taking center stage in our modern clean energy mix, keeping Britain powered up during the coldest, darkest time of the year while strengthening our energy security."

Wharton added that a system dominated by renewable energy sources like wind and solar is the most cost-effective for consumers, and expressed enthusiasm for working with the Government, now that there is a clear roadmap to achieving these goals.

This record marks a significant step forward for renewable energy in the UK, solidifying wind power’s role as a cornerstone in the nation’s transition to a more sustainable energy future.
