Vattenfall advances with Germany’s largest offshore wind farm
Vattenfall will invest in the Nordlicht offshore wind cluster, with 1.6 GW of capacity, enabling BASF to secure a long-term, sustainable renewable energy supply.
According to the investing company, the construction of the Nordlicht 1 and 2 wind farms is scheduled for 2026, and they will be operational by 2028. Nordlicht 1 will become the largest offshore wind project in Germany.
Helene Biström, Vattenfall's Head of Wind Energy Business Area, stated, “The Nordlicht offshore wind cluster marks a significant milestone on the path to energy independence. By accelerating Germany's energy transition and supporting industrial decarbonization, it will provide clean and reliable energy while fostering innovation and sustainability in the sector. We look forward to carrying out this important project in close collaboration with our supply chain partners.”
Vattenfall will buy back the shares of the Nordlicht cluster that BASF acquired in 2024. At the same time, BASF secured long-term access to renewable electricity supply, continuing the collaboration. This agreement will ensure renewable energy for BASF's chemical production in Europe at a time when additional supply will be crucial.
As part of Vattenfall's sustainability initiatives, both wind farms will feature turbine towers partially made of low-emission steel, reducing their overall carbon footprint by 16%.
The final investment decision for Nordlicht 2 is conditional, pending the necessary permits.
