What does a wind farm taste like?

In an unexpected blend of renewable energy, marine biology, and cinema, Swedish energy company Vattenfall has launched a unique vision for a sustainable future: snacks made from seaweed grown in an offshore wind farm, in collaboration with American actor Samuel L. Jackson.

This bold and flavorful initiative aims to show that offshore wind farms can do much more than generate fossil-free electricity. As part of the WIN@sea project, Vattenfall and its partners are exploring the potential of these installations to produce food, regenerate marine ecosystems, and monitor natural environments.

The seaweed used in these “Wind Farmed Seaweed Snacks” grows between the turbines at Vattenfall’s Vesterhav Syd wind farm in Denmark. This marine biomass not only absorbs carbon dioxide and excess nutrients but also contributes to the regeneration of surrounding marine habitats. After being harvested, the seaweed is processed for various uses, including food.

Although these snacks are not intended for mass market, a limited quantity has been produced and will be shared with selected recipients. More than a commercial product, they are a statement of intent about how energy infrastructure should evolve in a world striving to balance production, sustainability, and biodiversity.

Samuel L. Jackson, widely recognized for his roles in Pulp Fiction, Star Wars, and the Marvel Cinematic Universe, joined the project not just as a public figure but as a passionate advocate for ocean health. In fact, Jackson has a background in marine biology, and his deep concern for the environment has been a driving force behind his involvement.

“For me, it’s about the world we leave for the next generation. That’s why I wanted to be part of this collaboration with Vattenfall,” Jackson says. “These offshore wind farms don’t just produce fossil-free electricity — they also create a habitat for marine life to thrive. Seaweed, for example, is a food source that can help regenerate the marine environment. It’s a forward-thinking vision”,  Jackson said.

Helle Herk-Hansen, Vattenfall’s Head of Environment, emphasizes that the project reflects a broader perspective on energy infrastructure: “It’s about taking a wider approach, working with partners to find innovative ways to use our fossil-free infrastructure in harmony with nature. The wind-farmed seaweed snacks prove this is possible. And with a powerful voice like Samuel L. Jackson helping to spread the message, we’ve been able to reach more people.”

So, what do these wind-powered snacks actually taste like? Those lucky enough to try them describe them as salty and flavorful, though the project’s true value extends far beyond taste.

This initiative challenges us to rethink how our energy infrastructure can coexist with nature.
