Wind energy generated nearly half of Ireland's electricity in February

Wind energy provided 48% of Ireland's electricity in February, making it the country's main source of electricity last month, according to Wind Energy Ireland, which released its monthly wind energy report today.

The combination of strong performance from Irish wind farms and the new Greenlink interconnector with Great Britain made February 2025 the cleanest month to date for Ireland's power grid, according to expert analysis from Green Collective.

The wind energy report also found that wind generation ranked as the third-highest ever recorded for a February month.

Noel Cunniffe, CEO of Wind Energy Ireland, stated, "The electricity generated from Irish wind farms replaces imported fossil fuels and helps reduce wholesale electricity prices. Our wind farms cut gas spending for electricity generation in Ireland by nearly one billion euros last year. Wind energy is our primary source of clean electricity."

Electricity prices

The average wholesale electricity price in Ireland per megawatt-hour during February 2025 was €140.86, slightly down from €167.51 in January.

On days with higher wind energy, the average cost of a megawatt-hour of electricity dropped by more than 20% to €94.46, and it rose again to €187.57 on days when the country relied almost entirely on fossil fuels.

Noel Cunniffe added, "Having an affordable and clean electricity supply is really important for Irish families and businesses. Investment in our power grid was the top recommendation this week from the Irish Fiscal Advisory Council and the Climate Change Advisory Council, who rightly identified it as a top priority for this government. A stronger grid means a more secure supply of clean, affordable electricity."

According to data provided by Green Collective, the wind farms in Kerry maintained their leading position, generating more wind energy than any other county (199 GWh) last month.

The report also indicated that Irish wind farms have generated 35% of the country's total electricity so far this year.

The results of this report are based on SCADA data from EirGrid, compiled by MullanGrid, market data provided by ElectroRoute, and county-level wind generation data provided by Green Collective.
