Wind energy production reaches record highs in Portugal
Portugal reached a new wind energy production record on March 19, 2025, with a total daily output of 112.4 GWh, surpassing the previous high of 110.3 GWh recorded on November 24, 2024. The extreme weather conditions brought by Storm Martinho also led to a new peak wind power generation of 5080 MW at 12:15 PM, exceeding the 5034 MW recorded on February 29, 2024.
According to data from REN – Redes Energéticas Nacionais, wind energy accounted for 56% of the country’s electricity consumption on March 19, while total renewable energy production covered 92% of national demand.
Since the beginning of the year, renewables have supplied 79% of Portugal’s electricity needs, with hydropower contributing 39%, wind power 28%, solar 7%, and biomass 5%.
These figures confirm Portugal’s continued commitment to increasing the share of renewable energy in its electricity system while maintaining supply security and service quality, even under extreme weather conditions.
