Wind power wins public favor in Ireland, 80% support expansion
The people of Ireland are wholeheartedly backing wind energy, with a recent national survey revealing that 80% of the public supports the development of wind energy. Conducted by Interactions Research on behalf of Wind Energy Ireland, the survey also found that 62% of respondents are in favor of hosting a wind farm in their local area.
This marks a continued rise in support for wind energy, which is Ireland’s leading renewable resource. The survey highlighted several key reasons for this widespread backing, including the promise of more affordable electricity, reducing carbon emissions, and the positive environmental impact of wind energy. Additionally, wind energy's role in fostering Irish energy independence played a significant role in gaining public approval.
Opposition to wind energy remains minimal, with just 4% of respondents expressing disagreement.
Noel Cunniffe, CEO of Wind Energy Ireland, expressed enthusiasm about the findings: "Irish people are hugely supportive of wind energy and recognize that it is the leading solution to rising energy costs and the climate emergency."
He added, "Wind power is already helping to reduce electricity prices, cut carbon emissions, and create jobs in communities across the country. With public support stronger than ever, we need to accelerate investment in grid infrastructure and skills to maximize the benefits for families, businesses, and the environment."
The survey also spotlighted offshore wind energy, with 75% of participants showing support and 82% acknowledging its vital role in securing Ireland's energy supply. However, only one in four believes that Ireland is doing enough at the policy level to drive offshore wind development.
Cunniffe emphasized the enormous potential of offshore wind, noting, "Offshore wind represents an incredible opportunity for Ireland. It could be the foundation of our national energy independence. Research indicates that Ireland’s offshore wind farms could generate €38 billion for the Irish economy by 2050 if we unlock its full potential."
While support for wind energy has never been stronger, Cunniffe stressed that the Irish government needs to act quickly. "The public is behind us, but they want to see faster progress. The Government must identify new sites for offshore wind energy projects and enhance the electricity grid to accommodate the vast amount of clean power these wind farms can provide."
With the Irish people firmly behind wind energy, the future of renewable energy in Ireland looks bright.
