CIP unveils 800 MW green hydrogen project in Germany
Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP), through its Energy Transition Fund (CI ETF I), and Friesen Elektra Green Energy AG (Friesen Elektra) have initiated the Anker project, a green hydrogen production plant in Sande, Germany.
The company anticipates the project will have an electrolyser capacity of 400 MW, with plans to expand to 800 MW at a later stage.
The project could produce 80,000 tonnes of green hydrogen per year, benefiting key German industries, including steel and chemicals, as well as the transport sector.
Furthermore, the new plant will boost the regional economy of Lower Saxony by creating new jobs, driving growth, and fostering active community participation.
Anker will be powered by renewable energy from the electricity grid, supported by both onshore and offshore wind energy, as well as solar power. By replacing fossil fuels with green hydrogen, the project could reduce CO? emissions by up to 2.4 million tonnes annually, equivalent to the emissions of approximately 340,000 households.
The chosen location for the project is strategic, close to Wilhelmshaven, an important energy and industrial hub, and near the future central hydrogen network in Germany.
Felix Pahl, partner at CIP, stated, “The Anker project has the potential to make a significant contribution to Germany’s path towards a carbon-neutral future. At CIP, we continue to see great potential in green hydrogen despite a slower-than-expected market development and remain committed to investing in large-scale renewable infrastructure solutions to decarbonize energy-intensive industries.”
Christian Gätje, CFO of Friesen Elektra, added, “This collaboration is an important step towards creating one of Germany’s leading hydrogen production sites. Together, we aim to accelerate the energy transition and advance decarbonization by leveraging our combined strengths and experience.”
CIP’s Energy Transition Fund I (CI ETF I) is the world’s largest green hydrogen fund dedicated to new facilities. CI ETF I has built a leading portfolio of Power-to-X projects, with around 6.5 GW of electrolyser capacity in its global development pipeline.
