Danish hydrogen to Germany CIP and Uniper form strategic partnership
Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) and Uniper, a leading global energy merchant and significant power producer, have united to foster cooperation in producing, transporting, and promoting green hydrogen from the HOST PtX Esbjerg project. Located on the Danish Westcoast, this endeavor seeks to provide green hydrogen to the German market.
By the end of 2028
The HOST project aims to link with the German hydrogen network by the end of 2028 via a new pipeline, a collaborative effort between Danish transmission system operator Energinet and Gasunie Deutschland Transport Services. This strategic initiative will streamline access to consumption points in Germany, enhancing the availability of competitively priced green hydrogen in the market.
140.000 tons of green hydrogen annually
In collaboration, CIP and Uniper will endeavor to supply up to 140.000 tons of green hydrogen annually to customers in Germany. Uniper intends to incorporate the green hydrogen from HOST into its green gas portfolio, offering various contract lengths and catering to diverse flexibility requirements in the industry.
Uniper's diversified hydrogen portfolio
Holger Kreetz, Uniper's COO, underscores the significant potential of the collaboration, citing the alignment of the HOST project with their strategic objective of attaining a minimum of 1 GW installed electrolyser capacity by 2030. He highlights the synergy with other electrolyser ventures like Green Wilhelmshaven in Germany. Kreetz emphasizes Uniper's diversified hydrogen portfolio, comprising multiple supply sources to ensure competitive and reliable provisions tailored to customer requirements.
Pioneering emerging market
Karsten Plauborg, a partner at CIP, highlighted the significance of this partnership for both CIP and the HOST PtX Esbjerg project. Leveraging the ample renewable energy resources from the North Sea and the forthcoming hydrogen pipeline linking Denmark to Germany, this collaboration signifies a notable advancement in supplying green hydrogen from the HOST project to German customers. Plauborg emphasized that although CIP possesses a significant portfolio of power-to-gas projects, Uniper's influential position with German energy customers is instrumental in pioneering this emerging market.
