Germany opens second funding call for hydrogen projects abroad
The German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi), together with the Federal Ministry for Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR), has announced a second funding call to support the implementation of renewable hydrogen projects and their derivatives outside Europe. German companies can submit their project proposals until 18 December 2025.
The funding guidelines for international hydrogen projects aim to foster the development of a global renewable hydrogen market and are divided into two modules. Funding under Module 1, provided by the BMWi, focuses on the construction of industrial-scale plants for the production of renewable hydrogen and its derivatives, as well as complementary research projects such as feasibility studies.
The initiative is also designed to promote the use of German hydrogen technologies abroad while preparing and implementing import routes to Germany.
With this directive, the BMWi seeks to strengthen Germany’s expertise in hydrogen technologies in an international context. The main objective is to enable German SMEs—both technology providers and project developers—to test innovative international projects and open new markets. Each project may receive up to €30 million in funding, subject to budgetary restrictions until the 2026 federal budget comes into effect.
On 13 October 2025, interested companies will have the opportunity to learn more about the funding guidelines and available opportunities during an information event. Registration for the event is available through the following link.
