Indo-German agreement sets targets for green hydrogen production and exports
German Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Climate Action, Robert Habeck, announced a joint roadmap for green hydrogen development between Germany and India, aiming to accelerate global green hydrogen production and make it economically viable. This agreement was established as part of the 7th German-Indian Government Consultations and marks a significant milestone in both countries' energy partnership, which began in 2006.
Minister Habeck emphasized that Germany and India share a strong commitment to decarbonizing hard-to-abate industries, including steel and cement, which are critical to achieving climate-neutral production. “Germany and India are pulling together on green hydrogen,” said Habeck. He highlighted India’s unique position with low renewable energy costs, which gives it the potential to become a competitive global hub and exporter of green hydrogen. This partnership offers German energy companies new investment opportunities in India, while providing Germany with the critical green hydrogen imports it will need to transition its economy toward sustainability.
India has set ambitious plans to establish a production capacity of 5 million tons of hydrogen annually by 2030. Meanwhile, Germany's National Hydrogen Strategy projects a domestic demand for hydrogen and its derivatives to reach 95-130 TWh by 2030, equivalent to over 3 million tons. With imports expected to fulfill 50-70% of this demand, India’s role as a major supplier is anticipated to be vital.
The roadmap underscores collaboration in the private sector, fostering investments and sharing expertise, particularly for the decarbonization of challenging sectors. It also formalizes a standing working group on green hydrogen within the Indo-German Energy Forum (IGEF) to enhance policy frameworks and boost production, trade, and export efforts.
In the lead-up to the upcoming UN Climate Change Conference, this Indo-German initiative signals a strengthened commitment to advancing the energy transition and supporting global climate goals. With this roadmap, Germany and India aspire to play leading roles in the global hydrogen economy, accelerating both the energy transition and climate action worldwide.
