Two energy companies, SSE and EET Hydrogen, have joined forces to develop a cutting-edge green hydrogen production facility in the North West of England. The project, named Gowy Green Hydrogen, will be located at the Stanlow Manufacturing Complex in Ellesmere Port, Cheshire, and is expected to support the region’s decarbonisation efforts.
The initial phase of the facility will have a capacity of 40MWe and will supply hydrogen to local industries, helping them reduce carbon emissions while securing and creating jobs. The project is named after the nearby River Gowy and the Gowy Meadows Nature Reserve, reflecting its focus on sustainability.
Gowy Green Hydrogen could be operational by 2028, with feasibility studies already completed and site investigations underway. A planning application is anticipated in 2025, with a final investment decision to follow.
In the same vein, Jess Ledger, Green Hydrogen Lead at EET Hydrogen, commented, "Gowy Green is a fantastic addition to our portfolio, supporting our mission to become the UK's leading low-carbon hydrogen business. We’re excited to partner with SSE as the North West leads the way in decarbonising industry."
In addition, Hannah Bronwin, Director of Business Development at SSE Thermal, added, “Green hydrogen is crucial to decarbonising hard-to-abate industries and achieving a clean power system. This partnership with EET Hydrogen will help secure much-needed hydrogen capacity in a region already at the forefront of the energy transition.”
The UK aims to produce 10GW of low-carbon hydrogen by 2030, a goal that Gowy Green Hydrogen will contribute to, supporting the country’s net-zero ambitions.
