Scottish government announces £7 million green hydrogen funding

The Scottish Government is allocating £7 million to support green hydrogen projects across the country. Businesses can apply for up to £2 million in funding to cover development stage costs of green hydrogen production projects with production capacity of between 5 and 400 MW, which is equivalent to producing enough hydrogen to heat between 200 and over 16,000 homes.

According to the Scottish Government, the funding will also support workthat strengthens the hydrogen supply chain and storage solutions, playing a key role in helping the industry scale up to meet market demand.

Scottish Enterprise, Scotland’s national economic development agency, will facilitate and manage the fund. It complements a total of almost £7 million from the Scottish Government’s Hydrogen Innovation Scheme, which has supported 31 projects across the country since 2023.

“Our energy sector, and the development of green hydrogen in particular, will play a crucial role in Scotland’s economic growth and in achieving our net-zero emissions goals,” said Acting Climate Action Minister, Alasdair Allan.

“This funding, which will support the development of green hydrogen projects and hubs across the country, will help unlock opportunities in hydrogen use and exports over time, and drive the clean energy-intensive industries of the future,” Allan added.

Suzanne Sosna, Director of Energy Transition at Scottish Enterprise, stated: “This new fund will help kickstart green hydrogen projects, which is essential if we are to build the hydrogen economy we are aiming for in Scotland.”
