California remains a pioneer in the deployment of electric vehicles and the expansion of charging points, accounting for a significant percentage nationally. According to the latest data from the State Energy Data System (SEDS). The state has consistently led in electric vehicles and charging locations since 2016, with a notable increase in its sustainable mobility infrastructure.
The recent SEDS report, conducted by the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), reveals that California has maintained its leadership position in electric vehicle adoption and the proliferation of charging stations. By the end of 2022, the state accounted for 37% of registered light-duty electric vehicles in the US, showing a steady increase from 48% in 2016. Despite this percentage decrease, California remains the benchmark with a significant gap over the second highest EV state, currently Florida.

The exponential increase in the number of electric vehicles registered in California, from 247,400 to 1.1 million between 2016 and 2022, reflects the state's continued commitment to electric mobility. This increase has also been reflected in the expansion of charging infrastructure, with the number of charging locations tripling from 5,486 to 14,822 during the same time period.
California still leads with a figure four times that of the state with the second highest number of charging locations, currently New York. This growth has been driven in part by initiatives such as the California Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Project (CALeVIP), which has provided funding for the installation of public access charging stations, strengthening the electric charging network across the state.
The data also shows a growing national picture for electric mobility in the United States. The total number of registered electric vehicles in the country increased significantly, reaching 3.1 million in 2022 from 511,600 in 2016. In parallel, charging infrastructure has grown almost threefold, from 19,178 to 55,015 charging locations over the same period.
This solid progress in electric vehicle adoption and charging spot development underscores the growing acceptance of sustainable mobility across the United States, with California leading the way in this movement towards a cleaner, more energy-efficient future.
