DHL Express and Shell sign an agreement for SAF use at Brussels airport

DHL Express and Shell have signed a one-year agreement to promote sustainable air transport at Brussels Airport. The deal includes the delivery of 25 kt of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) to Brussels via a pipeline to the airport. The SAF used is certified under the voluntary certification system ISCC "ISCC Plus" and is expected to reduce GHG emissions by 80 kt of CO2e compared to traditional aviation fossil fuels.

Produced in a fossil refinery by substituting fossil crude oil with renewable feedstocks (co-processed), this fuel will be used to deliver air transport services with lower emissions for DHL Express customers through the DHL GoGreen Plus program.

This agreement is part of DHL's goal to achieve zero emissions related to logistics by 2050. According to the company, the GoGreen Plus service is designed to help achieve this goal and contributes to the interim target of using 30% SAF across all air transport by 2030.

Travis Cobb, Executive Vice President of Global Network Operations and Aviation at DHL Express, stated that "SAF is currently the most important way to reduce GHG emissions in air transport. Customers can actively contribute to making their supply chains more sustainable by using our SAF-based GoGreen Plus service."

For his part, Raman Ojha, President of Shell Aviation, said that "the collaboration with DHL at Brussels Airport reflects a joint commitment to reducing emissions in air cargo transport in particular and across the entire aviation value chain. By supplying SAF, we are equipping the industry (and our customers) with low-carbon solutions that will support the transition to sustainable aviation."
