Europe falls behind in global EV battery race
According to a report by the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association (ACEA), the demand for batteries for electric vehicles (EVs) has grown significantly, and the EU has struggled to meet this demand solely through domestic production.
Currently, the European Union accounts for only 7% of global battery production, and just 15% of its production capacity is managed by Europe-based companies, while 75% is controlled by South Korean companies.
Chinese manufacturers accounted for 83% of global production in 2023, while the United States represents 6%.
Dependence on Imports
According to the data, more than 20% of the demand for EV batteries in the continent is met through imports.
In 2023, the European Union imported approximately €27 billion worth of batteries. Around 90% of these imports came from just three Asian countries, with China accounting for 87% of the total.
China is the world's largest exporter of batteries for electric vehicles, and around 12% of its production is destined for export.
