Chris Wright: the speech of the oilman nominated by Trump as Secretary of Energy

In a move that further aligns with his commitment to fossil fuel dominance, the newly elected President of the United States, Donald Trump, has nominated Chris Wright, CEO of Liberty Energy, as his candidate for Secretary of Energy. Wright, an outspoken advocate for the oil and gas industry, has previously voiced strong opposition to the concept of a "clean energy transition," which he describes as an exaggerated and deceptive term.

Who is Wright and where is his discourse directed?

Wright, who leads a company that provides services related to hydraulic fracturing (fracking) in the United States, believes that the terms "clean energy" and "energy transition" are little more than marketing strategies aimed at pushing policies that benefit the wealthy elite, while leaving the broader population to bear the costs. In a video posted on his LinkedIn account, Wright remarked, "‘Energy transition’ is another term that has been used to justify policies that deploy large government subsidies and mandates to enrich the well-off and connected, while impoverishing everyone else." His criticism extends to wind and solar energy, which he claims cannot truly be described as “clean” or “low environmental impact” due to the heavy use of cement, steel, and polysilicon in the production of turbines and solar panels.

Wright’s nomination as Energy Secretary is poised to further the Trump administration's energy policies, which focus on expanding the use of fossil fuels and reducing regulations that are seen as restrictive to private investment. In his confirmation statement, Trump highlighted Wright’s leadership in the energy sector, stating that Wright "will be a key leader who will drive innovation, cut red tape, and usher in a new 'Golden Era of American prosperity and global peace.'"

Wright, a graduate of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) with a background in engineering, founded Pinnacle Technologies in 1992, a company dedicated to shale gas extraction services. He went on to serve as the president of Stroud Energy, one of the early producers of shale gas, from 2000 to 2006. In 2011, he established Liberty Energy, a $2.8 billion energy company that specializes in fracking, a practice that remains controversial in many parts of the world but is central to the US energy economy.

His dedication to fossil fuel extraction is clear. Wright has repeatedly stated that the global focus on reducing fossil fuel use is misguided, claiming, "There is no climate crisis, and we are not in the middle of an energy transition." His stance places him at odds with climate change advocates and the international consensus, which calls for a move toward renewable energy to mitigate the effects of global warming.

Furthermore, Wright has been a strong proponent of the continued development of pipelines and other fossil fuel infrastructure to meet the growing energy demand. As a key figure in Trump’s newly-formed National Energy Council, Wright will play a crucial role in the President's efforts to ensure US energy dominance. The National Energy Council is expected to streamline government regulations and enhance private sector investments in the energy sector, positioning innovation above long-standing environmental regulations.

However, Wright’s appointment comes amid growing concerns about the future of renewable energy under a potential second Trump presidency. In Europe and the US, manufacturers of wind turbines and solar panels are already facing challenges from low-cost competition from China. Trump’s skepticism of climate change and his expressed intention to roll back policies such as the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA)—which was signed into law in 2022 to promote domestic renewable energy manufacturing—further complicates the outlook for clean energy projects.

During his campaign, Trump threatened to suspend new offshore wind projects upon taking office, citing unsubstantiated environmental concerns, such as potential harm to whale populations. His position on renewable energy investments like the IRA has been clear: he intends to scale back or eliminate what he calls the "green scam," a plan that he believes ignores the realities of the energy market and climate change.

As the Trump administration seeks to consolidate US energy dominance, Wright’s role will be pivotal in shaping the nation’s energy future, one that prioritizes traditional energy sources over environmental concerns.
