ContourGlobal acquires 500 MW of battery storage assets in Greece

ContourGlobal has entered the Greek renewable energy market through the acquisition of approximately 37 MWp of operational solar PV assets and 500 MW / 2,000 MWh of battery energy storage systems (BESS), marking a major step in the company’s European expansion. The first 100 MW of battery storage are ready to begin construction in the coming months, with commercial operation expected by early 2027.

The Greek solar portfolio includes 26 operational PV plants across the country, commissioned between 2011 and 2022, previously owned by Quest Energy, a subsidiary of Quest Holdings. With a total capacity of 37 MWp, the assets are fully contracted under Feed-in Tariff (FiT) and Feed-in Premium (FiP) schemes, generating around 51 GWh annually — enough electricity to supply approximately 15,000 households.

ContourGlobal has also acquired six battery storage projects from developers FRV (Spain) and Zephiros (Greece), totaling 500 MW / 2,000 MWh of storage capacity. The first of these projects, the 100 MW / 400 MWh Taxiarches facility in Thessaly, is ready-to-build with construction scheduled to start in the first quarter of 2026. It will become one of Greece’s first operational merchant BESS facilities, providing four hours of storage to support renewable integration and grid flexibility.

The remaining 400 MW / 1,600 MWh of storage capacity spans six additional projects that have secured environmental approvals, key permits, and grid connection applications. These projects fall under Greece’s Priority Regime for BESS, launched in March 2025 to accelerate up to 4.7 GW of standalone battery storage.

Antonio Cammisecra, CEO of ContourGlobal, said: “Entering the Greek market is a further step in ContourGlobal’s ambition to become a leading independent power producer in renewables and energy storage. Greece combines rapidly growing renewable penetration with a booming need for large-scale storage solutions. We see Greece as a key market to scale our battery storage portfolio and support the country’s energy transition.”

Although Greece is a relatively small electricity market in Europe, it is the second-largest in the Balkans and is experiencing rapid renewable growth. By 2060, solar and wind capacity is projected to reach 60 GW, with nearly 70% of installed capacity expected to come from renewables by the end of the decade. This growth underscores the increasing need for flexible, grid-scale storage.

These acquisitions strengthen ContourGlobal’s European platform for renewable energy and battery storage, complementing its presence in Italy, Spain, Austria, and Bulgaria, and reinforcing its footprint in Southeastern Europe.
