DHL Group signs renewable electricity deal for 16% of German power needs

DHL Group has signed a long-term electricity supply agreement with German utility EnBW Energie Baden-Württemberg AG. Beginning in 2026, the logistics company will receive around 80 gigawatt-hours of renewable electricity annually from the He Dreiht offshore wind farm in the North Sea. The ten-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) marks another milestone in DHL’s decarbonization strategy and will cover approximately 16 percent of its current electricity needs in Germany.

"Smart energy management is key to achieving our goals. The deal with EnBW is another important step on our path to net-zero greenhouse gas emissions in logistics by 2050. The long-term agreement with our energy partner ensures a reliable supply of electricity from renewable sources for our operations and contributes to supporting the energy transition. This is an example of how fostering proactive supplier relationships can contribute to a more sustainable and positive ecosystem", says Anna Spinelli, Chief Procurement Officer at DHL Group.

The He Dreiht wind farm is located in the German North Sea and is scheduled to begin operations in stages until spring 2026. It will be one of the largest offshore wind projects in Europe and among the first to be developed without government subsidies. The site will use 64 Vestas V236-15 turbines—each with a capacity of 15 megawatts—marking their first commercial deployment. With a total installed output of 960 megawatts, He Dreiht will be capable of supplying clean energy to the equivalent of 1.1 million households.

Following EnBW’s previous projects in the area—Hohe See and Albatros—the new wind farm will double the company's renewable generation capacity in the North Sea.

As part of its Strategy 2030, DHL Group aims to become the Green Logistics Provider of Choice. The company is investing in a broad range of sustainability initiatives, including renewable energy sourcing, electric vehicle adoption, climate-neutral buildings, and sustainable fuels. Its long-term ambition is to reduce all logistics-related emissions to zero by 2050.

Matthias Obert, Executive Director Trading at EnBW, added: “We are delighted to support DHL Group on its journey towards zero-emission logistics. This partnership underscores our position as a major provider of sustainable energy across Europe. PPAs are a targeted and highly flexible instrument for advancing the decarbonization of industrials. They support the companies we partner with in meeting their sustainability goals while underpinning the financing of our projects: a win-win situation for industry and the climate.”
