EDF and Masdar sign 15-year PPAs for solar and energy storage project in California
EDF power solutions North America and Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company (Masdar) have signed 15-year power purchase agreements (PPAs) covering the output of the BigBeau Solar+Storage Project, a facility located in Kern County, California, that combines a 128 MWac solar plant with a 40 MW/160 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS).
The project, which has been operational since December 2022, began delivering electricity to Southern California Edison under the new agreements on February 1, 2026.
According to the companies, the agreements will provide long-term renewable electricity and energy storage capacity to help meet California’s growing power demand while supporting the state’s clean energy objectives.
BigBeau is part of a 1.1 GW partnership between Masdar and EDF
BigBeau is one of seven projects included in the strategic partnership between Masdar and EDF power solutions North America, which encompasses a combined development portfolio of 1.1 GW.
Dustin Priemer, Director of Asset Management at Masdar Americas, said the agreement reflects the company’s commitment to expanding utility-scale clean energy generation across the United States.
“This agreement forms a part of Masdar’s growing portfolio in the United States, reflecting our focus on scaling reliable, utility-scale clean power. We are appreciative of our growing partnership with Southern California Edison and our shared commitment to investing in new generation capacity to meet growing energy demand in California,” he said.
Jacqueline de Fresart, Associate Director of Origination and Power Marketing at EDF power solutions North America, highlighted the company’s role in supporting SCE’s clean energy goals through the delivery of renewable energy and storage from an operating asset.
Masdar targets up to 25 GW of capacity in the United States
Active in the U.S. market since 2019, Masdar has invested several billion dollars in the country and plans to develop a portfolio of up to 25 GW over the next decade.
The company views renewable energy and battery storage as key technologies for strengthening grid resilience, enhancing energy security, and meeting rising electricity demand driven by electrification trends.
Meanwhile, EDF power solutions North America, one of the region’s largest renewable energy developers, has more than 35 years of experience and has developed 26 GW of wind, solar, and energy storage projects across North America, providing integrated solutions ranging from utility-scale generation to electric vehicle charging infrastructure.
