French government launches new renewable energy mapping tool
The law for accelerating the production of renewable energies puts local authorities at the heart of planning, and provides for them to define acceleration zones for the development of renewable energies in their territories. In order to allow elected officials to carry out this exercise, and with the aim of making all information relating to renewable energies accessible to the public, the Ministry of Energy Transition, Cerema and the National Institute of Information Geographical and Forestry (IGN) put a cartographic portal online.
The cartographic portal is intended to facilitate access to data and thus serve as a decision-making tool for defining future acceleration zones throughout the country. Free and in open data, it provides information on the production capacities of the territories, but also on the challenges for the development of the various renewable energies (reception capacity in the network, regulatory constraints, etc.).
In addition, in each department, a prefectoral referent will be appointed by the prefect of the department to examine renewable energy projects. In particular, his mission will be to support local elected officials in their planning work. The departmental territorial directorates (DDT) and the regional directorates for the environment, planning and housing (DREAL) will support it in this task and will each appoint a “renewable energy” referent within their ranks. Thanks to this support, all municipalities will be able to define their acceleration zones.
"With the cartographic portal of renewable energies, the law of acceleration of the production of renewable energies finds a first very concrete translation. This tool, developed for municipalities and the general public, is the first step in the ecological planning process for terrestrial energies that the government has undertaken. We will be alongside local authorities throughout this essential process for achieving our decarbonization and renewable energy development objectives", said Agnès Pannier-Runacher, Minister for Energy Transition.
