French renewable energy industry sounds alarm over parliamentary moratorium

In an open letter addressed to the French National Assembly and government, leaders from the renewable energy sector, regional presidents, and major industry players express deep concern over the recent adoption of a moratorium on all new wind and photovoltaic installations.

The letter condemns the vote, supported by right-wing parliamentary groups, as a damaging political and industrial signal. It warns the moratorium threatens 80,000 jobs across companies vital to France’s energy sovereignty and reindustrialization efforts, risking years of investments in factories, logistics, and port infrastructure.

The signatories stress that such a halt would reverse France’s electrification efforts, further entrenching dependence on imported fossil fuels—which currently account for 65% of the country’s energy mix, costing €55.6 billion in 2024 alone. In the letter’s strongest passage, they write: "Worse, this moratorium would deliberately lock our country into deep dependence on imported fossil fuels, which today represent 65% of the energy mix, at a cost of €55.6 billion on our trade balance in 2024. We pay €150 million every day to oil-producing countries, primarily the United States and Russia. How can those who adopted this amendment speak to us about economic and industrial patriotism?"

They criticize the moratorium as lacking scientific and economic justification, undermining matured industrial projects and regional modernization efforts crucial to the country’s economic sovereignty.

The letter calls on deputies to reject the moratorium in the upcoming vote, urging them to act rationally and responsibly to protect jobs, industrial expertise, and France’s sustainable energy future.
