G2 Energy to build a 360 MW storage system in the UK
Elements Green has signed a £71.5 million deal with G2 Energy, part of Mitie Power & Grid, to design and build its 360 MW Staythorpe Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project in the UK. Once operational, it will be one of the largest BESS projects in Europe.
Mitie will lead the design and construction of the new 400kV substation, which will connect to the National Grid Staythorpe 400kV substation, located northwest of Newark-on-Trent in Nottinghamshire, by mid-2027.
With a peak power capacity of 360 MW and an energy storage capacity of 720 MWh, the project will have the ability to power over 95,000 homes for a full day and is expected to have an operational life of 40 years.
According to information from Elements Green, the project is also committed to delivering at least a 25.7% net biodiversity gain through 12 acres of landscaping to create woodlands and wildflower meadows, including the planting of 129 trees.
After receiving full planning approval in 2024, work on site is set to begin this month. A total of approximately 60 jobs are expected to be created during the construction of the BESS.
G2 Energy, which carries out large-scale, high-voltage battery storage and power connection projects, joined Mitie in the summer of 2023. Its specialties include battery energy storage solutions, renewable embedded generation (wind turbines and solar PV), EV charging hubs, and DNO & Transmission Network grid connections.
Rasmus Friis, CEO of Elements Green, said: “This historic partnership with Mitie marks a significant step forward in delivering one of Europe’s largest energy storage projects. The Staythorpe Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) will strengthen grid resilience, drive the transition to a low-carbon economy, and deliver lasting benefits to communities and businesses nationwide.”
Mark Caskey, Managing Director of Projects at Mitie, expressed excitement about “starting the work alongside Elements Green at Staythorpe and seeing one of the country’s largest grid battery energy storage projects become a reality.”
Kelvin Ruck, Managing Director of Mitie Power & Grid, said: “We’ve been collaborating with Elements Green over the past few months to optimize the design and delivery schedule for this prestigious energy storage project. We look forward to building a long-term partnership with the team at Elements Green.”
