Green light for the Clean Energy Industries Sector Plan: £700 million boost for renewables in Great Britain
The UK government has published its Clean Energy Industries Sector Plan to "build it in Great Britain," through which communities across Great Britain will benefit from good jobs and investments in the clean energy economy.
As part of this plan, Great British Energy will receive an additional £700 million to build manufacturing facilities in the country for key components of the clean energy revolution, such as floating offshore platforms, electrical cables, and cutting-edge hydrogen infrastructure.
This adds to the initial £300 million from Great British Energy for offshore wind supply chains, which the Secretary of Energy confirmed last week and has already catalyzed an additional £700 million from the industry and the Crown Estate.
With this additional budget, total public and private funding for clean energy supply chains amounts to £1.7 billion. This investment will generate thousands of jobs, boost growth in coastal communities and industrial cities, and ensure a cleaner and more independent energy future for Great Britain.
According to the UK government, clean energy is the economic opportunity of the 21st century, and thanks to the government's mission in this area, investment is booming in the UK, with over £40 billion in private clean energy investment announced since July. This historic plan, developed with industry, trade unions, and workers from all regions of the country, sets the UK on a path to unleash the wave of jobs and investments that clean energy can bring, and the government aims to at least double current investment levels in our frontier clean energy industries to over £30 billion per year by 2035.
This comes after the Spending Review confirmed the largest local energy investment program in UK history, from launching a golden era of nuclear energy with funds to build the Sizewell C nuclear power station on the Suffolk coast and small modular reactors, to £9.4 billion for carbon capture industries.
Energy Secretary Ed Miliband noted that "This government is doubling down on Great Britain's strengths in clean energy as we build this new era of clean energy abundance, helping to generate good jobs, energy security, and lower domestic bills."
Meanwhile, Great British Energy CEO Dan McGrail stated that "they will help the UK win the global race for growth and jobs in clean energy by investing in local supply chains and ensuring that key infrastructure components are manufactured here in Great Britain."
