New leadership at Great British Energy: Dan McGrail joins as interim CEO

Dan McGrail, current CEO of RenewableUK, will become the new interim CEO of Great British Energy. Starting in March and for a period of six months, he will help drive the Government's Change Plan and its mission to become a clean energy superpower, according to the UK Government.

McGrail is expected to provide strong leadership and help rapidly scale the new company, so it can start delivering results as soon as possible.

According to government information, the current event programs and policy work will continue during this period, with a focus on supporting offshore wind development, creating new supply chains, grid infrastructure, storage, green hydrogen, and system flexibility.

This change also brings the promotion of offshore wind CEO Jane Cooper to deputy CEO of RenewableUK. Cooper will take on the role of leader of the organization during this period. Jane joined RenewableUK in 2022 after serving as Director of Regulatory and External Affairs at Ørsted. She has solid experience in the renewable energy sector and has worked closely on establishing many historic collaboration partnerships between the industry and government, including the Offshore Wind Sector Deal and the Offshore Wind Growth Partnership.

RenewableUK is in a very positive position, as Dan has already overseen the growth of the organization to over 500 member companies. The level of member engagement with the association remains consistently high, and this will continue to be a priority for the leadership team.

McGrail stated, "Clean, local, and affordable energy has never been more important, and it is a privilege to take on the role of interim CEO of Great British Energy at such a crucial time. Along with the talented leadership team, I am excited to get started right away to scale the company and work with the industry to generate billions of dollars in clean energy investments, helping to grow new industries at scale with job opportunities for hundreds of thousands of people, while helping the government achieve its clean energy goals."

The Chairman of RenewableUK's Board, Paul Cooley, Director of Offshore Wind at SSE Renewables, expressed his support for McGrail, saying, "He has the right combination of leadership skills and energy industry experience to take Great British Energy to its next stage of maturity, and he has been a driving force throughout his career in the sector. He has transformed RenewableUK into a leading voice in the industry, and his appointment is a strong vote of confidence in the work of the organization. I am confident he will set a strategy at Great British Energy that will allow our country to seize the incredible opportunities for economic growth and job creation that the transition to clean energy offers."

Meanwhile, Jane Cooper, Deputy CEO of RenewableUK, stated that she has "a clear understanding of our future work program, both with members and with the Government, so during this interim period, we will, as is often said in this sector, be in execution mode."
