Portugal breaks renewable energy production record

Renewable energy production in Portugal has reached a new high, having exceeded consumption needs for 149 hours in a row. This record, according to Redes Energéticas Nacionais (REN), occurred between 04:00 on 31 October and 09:00 on 6 November, i.e. for more than six consecutive days.

During this period, 1102 GWh were produced, surpassing the national consumption figure for the same period by 262 GWh (840 GWh). The previous record for renewable energy production was 131 hours in 2019.

In that 149-hour period, two more records were broken:

- The first, between 10 p.m. on 31 October and 9 a.m. on 6 November, in which renewable energy production was greater than necessary to supply the entire National Electricity System (including the pumping needs of hydroelectric reservoirs), without any recourse to conventional thermal generation sources, namely natural gas combined cycle plants.

- The other record was between 10 a.m. on 1 November and 9 a.m. on 5 November, and corresponds to 95 consecutive hours in which renewable production was greater than consumption, without the need to use combined cycle natural gas plants, and with Portugal exporting to Spain, surpassing the previous record of 52 hours, recorded in 2018.

“These important records confirm that Portugal has maintained a sustainable trajectory in the progressive incorporation of endogenous renewable sources, maintaining the primary objectives of security of supply and quality of service,” REN said in a statement.
