Portugal gives 'green light' to dozens of new renewable projects, totaling 6 GW

The Ministry of Environment and Climate Action (MAAC) announced through an official statement that a new capacity of 5 GW will be allocated to the first 23 projects of electricity production from renewable energies listed by REN (Redes Energéticas Nacionais), as operator of the electricity transmission grid. The list includes projects from companies such as EDPR, Smartenergy, Hyperion, SolCarport, Nenuphar Frontier, among others.

According to the Ministry, 1 GW will be made available for projects listed by the grid operator, E-Redes, covering the 39 eligible projects.

"The powers to be allocated under this process result from direct agreements between the promoters and the operators of the transmission and distribution networks," says the ministry in a statement. The two lists are mostly "centralized photovoltaic solar projects, including, in some cases, electricity storage systems using batteries".

These 6 GW are in addition to another 3.5 GW of large solar plants that have already been given the "green light" to sign agreements with REN, agreements that are expected to be signed soon.

"The realization, by 2030, of part of this new capacity is essential for meeting the goals established in the PNEC 2030 review, thus allowing materializing the benefits of the energy transition: stable and affordable prices, new value chains, green jobs and security energy, due to the increasing dependence of our country's endogenous resources.", says the MAAC in the statement.
