Portugal hits 72% renewable electricity supply by November
According to data from REN - Redes Energéticas Nacionais, renewable energy sources covered 72% of Portugal's electricity consumption from January to November 2024. Hydropower led the mix, supplying 29% of demand with a productivity index of 1.29 (historic average = 1). Wind energy followed at 27% with an index of 1.08, while solar energy provided 10% with an index of 0.94. Biomass contributed 6%, while natural gas accounted for 9%, and imports made up 19%.
In November alone, renewables supplied 68% of electricity consumption, with non-renewables contributing just 13%. Wind energy achieved a record daily production of 110.4 GWh on November 24, supported by favorable conditions and a productivity index of 1.09. Hydroelectric and solar production indices stood at 0.72 and 0.87, respectively.
Electricity consumption increased by 1.5% year-on-year through November (2.1% when adjusted for temperature and working days). However, November saw a 1.7% decline due to above-average temperatures, with adjusted figures showing a 0.7% increase.
Natural gas consumption remained stable in November compared to the same month in 2023. The electricity sector recorded a 9% increase in gas use, while conventional consumption fell by 2.6%. For the year, gas consumption reached its lowest level since 2003, down 20%, with a 62% reduction in electricity generation use and a 2.7% increase in conventional use. Gas received at the Sines terminal came primarily from Nigeria (53%) and the United States (41%).
