Electricity consumption in Portugal reached a new record in the first half of 2025, totaling 26,229 GWh between January and June, according to data published by REN – Redes Energéticas Nacionais. This figure surpasses the previous record set in 2010 by approximately 240 GWh and represents a 2.2% increase compared to the same period in 2024, or 2.0% when adjusted for temperature and the number of working days.

Renewable energy sources supplied 77% of total consumption during the six-month period. Hydropower contributed 36%, wind 26%, solar 11%, and biomass 5%. The remaining demand was met through natural gas, which accounted for 13%, and electricity imports, which represented 10%.

In June, electricity consumption grew 4.4% year-on-year (3.1% when adjusted). During the same month, renewable sources covered 55% of national consumption, while non-renewable generation covered 17% and imports 28%.

The solar segment reached daily generation peaks above 3,200 MW and, for the first time, matched wind power in monthly share. However, productivity indices for hydro, wind, and solar remained below their long-term averages in June, with values of 0.92, 0.88, and 0.91 respectively.

In the natural gas sector, total consumption increased by 10.1% in the first half of the year. The electricity production segment more than doubled its usage compared to the same period in 2024, while conventional consumption – including industrial and residential use – fell by 7.6%, reaching the lowest level since 2009.

Portugal sourced 96% of its natural gas supply through the Sines LNG terminal. Nigeria was the main supplier with 54% of the total, followed by the United States with 33%.
